About Us

The Australian General Practice Network (AGPN) is the peak national body representing 111 general practice networks and eight state based organisations around the country. The Network has a membership of about 90 percent of General Practitioners (GPs) at the local level. The Network delivers local heath solutions through general practice.

AGPN was established after a 1998 Commonwealth Government General Practice Strategy Review recommendation that a national organisation be established for the Network.

We improve the health and wellbeing of communities and individuals by providing national leadership and support through the general practice network.

Our Values

Passion - we are passionate about our purpose and the contribution we can make to improve the health and wellbeing of the Australian community through the general practice network. This is demonstrated in the way we approach our day-to-day, and longer term, tasks and responsibilities

Respect - recognises the value and dignity of every person who associates with us. It is our responsibility to treat all with whom we come into contact with justice and compassion no matter what the circumstances, and we are prepared to stand up for what we believe and challenge behaviour which is contrary to our values

Objectives

AGPN aims to promote the health and wellbeing of Australians through general practice networks, including by:

  1. Strengthening the effectiveness and vitality of the general practice sector through support to member divisions and member SBOs advocacy and representation of member divisions and member SBOs to the Federal Government, to other national organisations and to the Australian public
  2. Contributing to the development of national health policy in collaboration with member general practice networks and member SBOs
  3. Promoting cooperation and communication with other national organisations in Australia with objects similar to these objects of AGPN
  4. Providing national leadership in health system development

Programs

AGPN receives funding from the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing and other sources to manage National Programs for the Network to support general practice locally and to improve the health of all Australians.

AGPN's programs cover a broad range of primary health care issues, including immunisation, mental health, aged care and practice nursing. These programs aim to strengthen primary health care to better meet the needs of the Australian community. Where appropriate, AGPN works collaboratively with other organisations to develop and coordinate programs.
