The Government is committed to ensuring all Australians have access to a comprehensive integrated health care system that supports people at all stages of life.
Primary health care has gained considerable momentum in palliative care. The Rural Palliative Care (RPC) Project is strengthening linkages between the primary care and specialist palliative care sectors. These linkages are important priorities under the National Palliative Care Program, and the National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission 2009.
The National Palliative Care Strategy was developed on the principle that palliative care should form an integral part of the Australian health care system. The Government is currently undertaking a review of the National Palliative Care Strategy.
In the current reform climate AGPN believes it is timely to showcase and examine the successes of the Government’s RPC Project and other palliative care related reforms. It is also timely to discuss the policy and practice implications of the many primary health care in palliative care research projects, funded by numerous government grants.
As such, AGPN in collaboration with the Department of Health and Ageing, is hosting a two day forum at the Melbourne Airport Holiday Inn, 3 – 4 December 2009.
The Department is funding one representative (implementing project officer) from each of the 40 general practice networks participating in the RPC Project.
Other network member representatives and interested participants are welcome to attend. The program is reflective of work being undertaken in the RPC Project, Encourage Best Practice in Residential Aged Care (EBPRAC) projects and research and policy developments.
